DHF: Discount Widening As Uncertainty Increases

BNY Mellon High Yield Strategies Fund is a leveraged CEF providing exposure to the high-yield debt space. Recent market volatility and widening high-yield spreads have pressured DHF's portfolio, causing the NAV to dip lower. On top of that, the fund's discount has also been widening, but this makes it a more interesting time to consider adding to this fund overall.

DHF: Risks Are Too Great For A Contrarian Purchase

The BNY Mellon High Yield Strategies Fund offers an 8.82% yield, but underperforms compared to other junk bond funds and faces risks from potential economic recession and inflation. Current economic conditions, including recession fears and inflation expectations, make junk bonds risky, with the fund's share price down 6.67% year-to-date. Economists and banks think that there is a high probability of a recession, but businesses are not acting like a recession is a near-term probability.

DHF: Don't Be Misled By The Strong Recent Performance

The BNY Mellon High Yield Strategies Fund boasts an 8.11% yield, which beats the fixed-income indices but is not impressive compared to peers. Despite a recent 11.16% share price increase, the DHF fund's net asset value only rose by 1.86%, raising concerns about its current valuation. The fund does have a bit more diversity than a typical junk bond fund, which could give it some advantages over a typical fund.

5 Closed-End Fund Buys In The Month Of September 2024

The broader market indexes continue to hit all-time highs, with broader participation continuing into September. Every month, I add to my positions in my closed-end fund portfolio to grow my cash flow month after month. The main theme this month, which has been most of the theme this year, was adding to funds that should benefit from a lower rate environment.

DHF: Relatively Attractive And Fully Covered ~8% Yield

BNY Mellon High Yield Strategies Fund offers a diversified portfolio of below-investment-grade debt, with geographic diversification in U.S. and European markets. The fund's discount has narrowed, boosting total returns, but it remains a relative bargain in the high-yield CEF space. DHF's distribution is fully covered even after raising the monthly payout earlier in the year, delivering an 8.05% distribution yield to investors.
